Dr. Alexander von Meyer

Alexander von Meyer is a specialist in laboratory medicine and head of the Institute for Laboratory Medicine at Barmherzige Brüder Klinikum Dritter Orden in Munich. He trained in medicine at the Technical University of Munich, completed his specialist training in clinical chemistry at Munich's municipal hospitals (Städtisches Klinikum München), and holds an MBA with a thesis on optimising hospital laboratory supply using Lean management and Six Sigma.

His work focuses on the preanalytical and postanalytical phases, laboratory automation and process optimisation, point-of-care testing, and the economics and quality management of hospital laboratories. He chairs the EFLM Committee for the Preanalytical Phase (C-PRE) and the DGKL Working Group on Extra-analytical Quality, is Associate Editor of the Journal of Laboratory Medicine and guest editor of Diagnosis, and lectures internationally on automation, sample stability, and the challenges facing hospital laboratories.

Over more than twenty years, he has led laboratories across very different settings — from regional hospital networks in Weiden and Amberg to the München Klinik group and Munich's faith-based non-profit hospitals — and has been recognised twice with the Quality Award of Städtisches Klinikum München for implementing electronic order entry and a networked POCT blood-gas system with centralised supervision.

Alexander lives in Munich, Germany with his wife and two children.
